Palghar: Two held for extorting Rs 10 lakh, gold jewellery from builder

Two men have been arrested for allegedly abducting a builder at gunpoint and extorting Rs 10 lakh in cash and gold jewellery weighing over 70 grams from him in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Friday, reported PTI.

The incident took place on October 2, when the accused allegedly lured the builder to a hotel in Nalasopara East on the pretext of purchasing a commercial shop at his construction site.

Accused allegedly lured builder with shop deal

According to police, the main accused, Rohit Subhash Jangid (27), and his accomplices contacted the builder to discuss the proposed purchase of the commercial premises. They allegedly asked him to meet them at a hotel to finalise the deal, reported PTI.

When the builder arrived at the location, the accused allegedly forced him into a black Hyundai Creta SUV. They then threatened him with a gun and demanded money and jewellery, police said.

Builder forced to hand over cash and gold

The accused allegedly held the builder at gunpoint and forced him to hand over Rs 10 lakh in cash and gold ornaments weighing more than 70 grams.

Following the incident, the builder approached the police and lodged a complaint, prompting an investigation into the alleged abduction and extortion, reported PTI.

Crime Detection Cell arrests two suspects

During the investigation, the Crime Detection Cell-3 in Virar apprehended Jangid and Vansh Shivkumar Gupta, alias Monu (21), on October 4, officials said, reported PTI.

The two were arrested in connection with the alleged crime, while further details about the other accomplices, if any, were not immediately available.

Cash and jewellery recovered

Police said they had recovered the entire amount of Rs 10 lakh and the gold jewellery from the two accused.

The arrests followed a probe launched after the builder reported the incident. Police have not provided further details about the motive behind the alleged crime or whether additional arrests are likely.

The accused are alleged to have used the promise of a commercial property deal to bring the builder to the meeting before abducting and threatening him. The investigation is continuing, police said.
