Police have registered a case against two businessmen from Rajasthan for allegedly cheating a woman cloth trader in Maharashtra's Thane district of Rs 1.62 crore, officials said on Thursday, reported PTI.
The accused gained the victim's trust and procured cloth valued at 1,62,68,507 from her unit in Bhiwandi between December 13, 2022 and August 21, 2024, reported PTI.
However, after taking delivery of the consignment, the accused failed to make the payment and defaulted on their dues, the Nizampura police said.
Based on the victim's complaint, the Nizampura police registered a case on Tuesday against the two Jaipur-based businessmen on charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust, an official said, reported PTI.
Kalyan man loses Rs 22 lakh to cyber fraudsters
In a separate incident, a man from Maharashtra's Thane district was allegedly duped of Rs 22 lakh by cyber fraudsters who lured him to invest in forex trading with a promise of lucrative returns and later threatened to harm his wife to extort money, police said on Tuesday, reported PTI.
The Kalyan police recently registered a case under section 308 (extortion) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Information Technology Act in connection with the fraud that began in August 2025, an official said.
The victim, a resident of Kalyan, allegedly received several calls and emails from the accused, who made him invest large sums in Forex trading by promising substantial profits, reported PTI.
When the victim refused to pay additional demanded fees or taxes to withdraw the funds, the accused threatened to harm his wife. The complainant transferred Rs 22 lakh into various bank accounts, the official said, reported PTI.
The police are tracking the digital footprint and have frozen the associated bank accounts, he added.
Ambergris worth Rs 2 crore seized in Palghar; five held
Meanwhile, the police have busted a racket involved in smuggling whale vomit (ambergris) in Maharashtra's Palghar district, seizing contraband worth Rs 2 crore and arresting five persons, an official said on Tuesday, reported PTI.
Based on a tip-off about the illegal trade of ambergris, the crime detection branch of the Vasai police station laid a trap on Sunday night and intercepted two men on a scooter and recovered 2 kg of the banned substance from their backpack, the official said.
Following interrogation, the duo revealed the involvement of three accomplices stationed near the Navghar bus depot in Vasai, and a police team immediately rushed to the location to apprehend the trio, reported PTI.
The accused were involved in smuggling ambergris from Kerala to Vasai with the intention of selling it in the black market, he said.
A case was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 and the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the official said.
