Police have registered a case against two BJP councillors and several others following a violent clash between workers of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the BJP in Ambernath in Maharashtra’s Thane district, officials said on Sunday, reported PTI.
The fresh case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by Suhas Ghag, a pest control business owner. It comes after police had earlier booked MNS leaders in connection with the clash.
According to the FIR, Ghag had gone to meet a relative in Shivajinagar on the night of August 11 when a crowd gathered amid an ongoing altercation.
Ghag later took injured relatives and acquaintances to the Shivajinagar police station. Around 12.15 am on August 12, an allegedly aggressive group confronted them outside the police station, police said.
The complainant alleged that BJP councillors Abhijit Karanjule and Pawan Walekar, along with five identified persons and several others, attacked him, reported PTI.
According to the FIR, Ghag was allegedly hit with an iron rod on his head and right hand and was also kicked and punched. The group also allegedly damaged his vehicle by throwing flower pots and breaking its windows, police said.
A case has been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway, the news agency reported.
No arrests have been made in this case so far.
MNS leaders earlier booked over alleged assault on BJP functionary
The latest case comes days after police arrested MNS Ambernath city president Shailesh Shirke and his associate for allegedly assaulting local BJP office-bearer Laxmi Narayan Chauhan.
According to police, the incident took place during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday and stemmed from a previous dispute.
Police said Chauhan was at his office in the Vadavali area with friends and family members when Shirke and other MNS workers allegedly entered the premises at night.
An official said the group allegedly pulled down the office shutter, trapping several women inside, before taking Chauhan outside and assaulting him on the street.
Following the incident, BJP leaders and workers went to Shivajinagar Police station to lodge a complaint. Tensions escalated when MNS supporters also arrived at the police station.
Clash erupts outside police station
A heated argument between the two groups soon turned into a physical altercation, police said. BJP workers allegedly assaulted Shirke and damaged his vehicle before police intervened and brought the situation under control.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case against Shirke and his associate under charges including extortion, robbery, house trespass, house-breaking and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, PTI reported.
A court in Ulhasnagar subsequently remanded Shirke and his aide in police custody for three days.
MNS leaders have also filed a counter-complaint alleging that BJP workers assaulted Shirke and vandalised his vehicle.
Following the clashes, security was stepped up in sensitive areas of Ambernath, officials said.
