I don’t recall if the shooting of Brown happened first or Ranbir [Kapoor] and Alia’s [Bhatt] wedding!” laughs Soni Razdan as she joins us on call to talk about Abhinay Deo’s seven-episode crime thriller. The Zee5 series gave the veteran actor more than a compelling role — it offered her a chance to bond with Karisma Kapoor, Ranbir’s cousin, better. “It was a pleasure working with her. The fact that we were already family made a huge difference and went a long way [in making] it easy,” says Razdan, who plays Karisma’s mother in the show.
Karisma Kapoor and Helen in ‘Brown’
Another co-star who made filming Brown delightful for Razdan was Helen who plays the matchmaker Aunt Bertha. Surprised by the yesteryear actor’s comic timing, she says, “Working with her was a revelation. She was just naturally funny. I was cracking up most of the time. I couldn’t say my lines because I wanted to laugh. I had a blast working with her.”

In her over four-decade journey in the industry, Razdan has played a myriad of characters across mediums, but her hunger to be part of a new story hasn’t faded. “It’s part of my identity. So, why would I want to relinquish that? I love working as I’m very restless. I enjoy going out, meeting people, and doing my scenes. It keeps me alive and [makes me] feel relevant. I’m also earning some money. I think retirement is one of the cruelest things that exists in our society. You should either be kicked out or leave when you’re tired. But if you have the energy, you should be allowed to work,” she argues, especially as she believes this is the best time for actors in their 40s and 50s.
