Inspired by the infamous Ranga-Billa case that shook Delhi in 1978, Raakh transforms one of India`s most horrifying crimes into an emotionally gripping crime drama. Even for viewers unfamiliar with the real-life case, the Prime Video series unfolds as a compelling mystery while never losing sight of the tragedy at its centre.
The eight-episode series follows Sub-Inspector Jay Prakash (Ali Fazal), the officer tasked with investigating the disappearance of siblings, Suman and Sahil Arora. Rather than focusing solely on the crime itself, Raakh tells the story through the eyes of a young cop battling pressure from superiors, public scrutiny and his own emotional investment in the case.
Ali Fazal delivers a restrained and sincere performance, making Jay Prakash easy to root for. Some of the show`s most touching moments come from his relationship with his father, Ghanshyam (Rakesh Bedi). Whether it is his father waiting up with food after a long shift or bringing him his famous mutton curry, their bond provides warmth and humanity amid an otherwise bleak narrative.
The emotional weight of the tragedy rests largely on the shoulders of Sonali Bendre, who plays Mona Arora, the children`s mother. Her portrayal of grief, denial and helplessness becomes increasingly heartbreaking as the series progresses. Meanwhile, journalist Nisar Rizvi (Anshul Chauhan) adds another dimension to the story. More than a romantic interest, she becomes an important ally in the investigation, and her belief that the real battle is to never lose hope emerges as one of the show`s central themes.
The standout performance, however, belongs to Akash Makhija as Babu. Makhija plays the role with chilling conviction, creating a character who is both unpredictable and terrifying. Every time Babu appears on screen, a sense of unease follows. It is easily the series` most memorable performance.
One of Raakh`s smartest decisions is withholding the complete account of what happened on the night of the murders until the final episode. The choice creates a constant sense of dread and ensures that the eventual reveal lands with devastating impact.
The final scene is perhaps the show`s most powerful. After the killers are sentenced to death and Jay Prakash finally fulfils his dream of becoming an inspector, the series imagines an alternate reality. This time, Suman and Sahil choose to run to the radio station instead of accepting a lift. Suman gets to sing on air while her proud parents listen from home. It is a beautiful yet heartbreaking reminder of the future that was stolen from them.
Raakh is not an easy watch, nor is it meant to be. Yet its strong performances, emotional depth and thoughtful storytelling make it one of the more affecting true-crime dramas in recent memory. Watch it if you`re prepared for a dark, heartbreaking story that stays with you long after it`s over.
