Woman attempts self-immolation at Bijnor police station over alleged rape case
A 20-year-old woman allegedly attempted self-immolation inside a police station in Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor district after demanding action against a man she accused of sexually assaulting her and later refusing to marry her, officials said on Monday, reported PTI.
The incident occurred around 11 pm on Sunday at the Bijnor Kotwali police station, where the woman allegedly poured an inflammable substance on herself and set herself ablaze.
Woman sustains severe burn injuries
Police personnel present at the station immediately rescued the woman and rushed her to a hospital. She was later referred to a higher medical facility in Meerut for advanced treatment.
According to doctors, she suffered burn injuries covering 50-60 per cent of her body.
Superintendent of Police Abhishek Jha said the woman had first filed a rape case against a man from Swaheri village and his family members in 2024, following which police submitted a report.
In 2025, she lodged another complaint alleging that the accused had entered into a relationship with her and subsequently refused to marry her.
Police said the accused later secured a stay order from the high court against his arrest, although a chargesheet had already been filed in the case.
Incident occurred during demand for immediate talks
According to investigators, the woman arrived at the police station on Sunday night and insisted that the accused and his family be summoned immediately for discussions.
Police assured her that the other party would be called on Monday. During this period, her stepfather allegedly brought a bottle containing an inflammable substance, which she later used to set herself on fire inside the police station premises.
Police officer suspended; inquiry ordered
The woman's mother has alleged that the accused's family has been mentally harassing her daughter since she filed the case.
Following the incident, the superintendent of police directed the Additional Superintendent of Police (City) to conduct an inquiry. CCTV footage from the police station is also being examined, reported PTI.
Meanwhile, Kotwali Station House Officer Amar Singh Rathore has been suspended in connection with the incident.
Police said further investigation is underway and action will be taken if any lapses are found.
