Mumbai Police have registered a theft case after two pairs of luxury earrings valued at approximately Rs 1.35 crore were reported missing during an international journey from Mumbai to New York, police said on Saturday.
The case has been registered at Sahar Police Station under Section 303 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), said an official.
According to the police, the complainant, Savleen Singh, 41, works as a makeup artist and has been associated with Bollywood fashionista Sonam Kapoor’s filmmaker-stylist sister Rhea Kapoor for the past seven years, handling makeup assignments for various fashion events.
As per the complaint, Singh was part of a team travelling with Kapoor to attend the prestigious fashion event known as the Met Gala in New York, said the official.
Jewellery carried for fashion event
Before the trip, two pairs of earrings had been obtained on rent from jewellery firms for use during the event.
The jewellery was reportedly entrusted to the complainant for safekeeping and was stored inside her handbag throughout the journey.
The team travelled on an Emirates Airlines flight from Mumbai to Dubai and then onwards to New York on April 27, 2026.
Theft discovered after arrival
Rhea Kapoor's team arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport at approximately 5.30 pm on April 28 and later checked into a hotel in New York.
According to the complaint, when the complainant opened the jewellery boxes to hand them over to another team member, she discovered that both pairs of earrings were missing.
Police believe the jewellery may have been stolen by an unidentified person at some point during the journey.
Details of missing jewellery
The missing items included a pair of emerald, diamond and gold earrings belonging to Mehta Jewellers, valued at approximately Rs 66 lakh and a pair of Zambian emerald earrings with a gold border belonging to Goenka Jewellers, valued at approximately Rs 69 lakh, said a police official.
The combined value of the missing jewellery is estimated at Rs 1.35 crore.
Investigation underway
Police have launched an investigation to determine when and where the theft took place.
The officials said that they were examining the travel route, baggage handling process and other relevant circumstances connected with the case.
Further inquiries are underway to identify the person responsible for the alleged theft.
