Boiwada police arrested a former driver for allegedly stealing a car belonging to Dr Pratik Rajan Mungekar, an educationist, researcher, international speaker, academic administrator and Chairman (India) of the World Peace Committee.
The accused, Faizaz Ahmed Shaikh, 35, a resident of Babu Dada Chawl in Ulhasnagar, was arrested after police traced him through technical evidence and recovered the stolen vehicle within two days.
Theft case
According to police, Dr Mungekar had parked his Maruti Suzuki WagonR near the ITC Hotel signal in Parel. The vehicle was allegedly stolen in the early hours of June 11. A case under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered against an unknown person.
Probe trail
Investigators initially found no CCTV footage of the theft. During questioning, Mungekar recalled that a spare key given to a former driver had never been returned. Police then focused on Shaikh, who had worked as his driver for around three months. Analysis of his call detail records allegedly placed him near the parking spot on the night of the theft.
Arrest made
A detection team led by PSI Sachin Borse conducted surveillance in Ulhasnagar for nearly 24 hours before apprehending Shaikh and recovering the stolen WagonR. Police said he had allegedly changed the vehicle’s number plate to avoid detection and was planning to flee to Uttar Pradesh. Facing financial difficulties, he allegedly intended to sell the car or drive it to his hometown.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of DCP (Zone II) Anurag Jain, Senior PI Dattatray Thakur and Inspector (Crime) Nitin Mahadik. Further investigation is underway. The accused has been remanded to judicial custody.
