Mumbai man, three relatives booked for alleged marriage fraud, dowry harassment

The Parksite police in Vikhroli have booked a 33-year-old man and three of his family members for allegedly concealing his existing marriage and deceiving a 37-year-old divorced woman into marrying him. They have also been booked for alleged dowry-related harassment, and cheating her family of Rs 24 lakh.

The complainant, a Powai resident and homemaker, had divorced her first husband and was looking to remarry. In 2023, she created a profile on a matrimonial site, where she disclosed that she was divorced. She alleged that the accused introduced himself as an unmarried businessman. They got married in a Buddhist ceremony in Bandra in 2023. The complainant stated that her parents gifted her gold jewellery weighing about 95.44 grams during the wedding. However, within a week of moving into her matrimonial home in Kamothe, Navi Mumbai, she alleged that her husband, father-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law began taunting her for not bringing dowry.

She claimed her husband would drunkenly assault her, and demand money. To save the marriage, her parents allegedly paid him Rs 24 lakh. She also alleged that her mother purchased a laptop for him.She further alleged that while she was pregnant in 2024, her husband gave her Ayurvedic medicines that led to a miscarriage.

She said he would travel frequently avoided video calls. She got suspicious about his other family when she got a call from a woman claiming to be his legally wedded wife and the mother of his eight-year-old son. “No arrests have been made so far. The accused will be questioned. We will also verify the complainant’s allegation regarding the miscarriage,” a senior police officer said.
