Cop’s swift action near CSMT foils machete attack attempt in Mumbai

A man brandishing a machete and allegedly threatening pedestrians on a busy road near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) was swiftly overpowered and disarmed following swift intervention by a police constable, an official said on Sunday.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening when the armed man began shouting and charging at crowds and a woman accompanying him, the official said, reported PTI.

According to the police, Constable Vishal Yashwant Gade, attached to the LA-2 unit at Tardeo and currently on deputation at the Police Commissioner’s office, was on his way to work when he spotted the armed man creating a ruckus.

Acting swiftly, Gade approached the suspect from behind and overpowered him, wresting the machete from his hand with the help of a passerby, the official said, reported PTI.

The suspect, along with the seized weapon, was handed over to personnel of the M.R.A. Marg Police Station and a mobile patrol squad present at the scene.

The woman was rescued safely, and the alert police constable averted a major tragedy, the official added.

Mumbai train murder accused remanded in police custody till June 30

Meanwhile, the Borivali metropolitan magistrate court on Thursday sent Roshan Ramesh Suvarna, the 30-year-old accused of stabbing a co-passenger to death on a local train, to police custody till June 30.

He had stabbed Mayank Lohar, 22, a resident of Virar, inside a first-class compartment of a local train in front of dozens of commuters.

‘Extremely serious offence’

Seeking custody, the police told the court that the accused had committed an extremely serious offence and further investigation was required to recover the weapon used in the murder, seize clothes worn during the incident, search the accused’s residence, and establish the exact motive behind the attack. Officials further said they needed to examine the accused’s background, prevent destruction or tampering of evidence, and conduct identification procedures through eyewitnesses. Police sources said that the investigators have identified several eyewitnesses and their statements will be recorded in the coming days.

Was accused intoxicated?

Police officials said it is still not confirmed whether the accused was under the influence of alcohol or any substance at the time of the incident. Medical tests were conducted after his arrest and reports are awaited. During questioning, Suvarna reportedly stated that “whatever happened, happened in anger.”

Lawyers seek judicial custody

The defence panel, including Advocate Jaywant Patil, Advocate Surendra Landge, Advocate Azad Gupta, and Advocate Amit Mishra opposed police custody and sought judicial custody instead, arguing that Suvarna was not a habitual offender and had no previous criminal record. Police custody is primarily for investigation and interrogation under police supervision, while judicial custody involves detention in jail under the authority of a magistrate.
