Maharashtra Excise Dept seizes 73,440 bottles of Goa liquor on Thane highway

Earlier this month, the state excise department seized 73,440 bottles of Goa-made Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth Rs 1.89 crore from a truck on the Panvel-Mumbra Highway in Thane district.

The seizure was made on Wednesday evening following a tip-off, Konkan Divisional Deputy Commissioner of State Excise Pradeep Pawar said.

According to officials, the truck driver initially claimed that the vehicle was transporting automobile parts. However, a thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 73,440 bottles of whisky manufactured in Goa.

Pawar said the liquor bottles did not carry batch numbers or maximum retail price (MRP) labels and are prohibited from being sold in Maharashtra. The driver has been booked under the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, and further investigation into the liquor smuggling case is underway.
