A football coach in Maharashtra`s Palghar district allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl for three years after promising to build her career in the sport, police said on Monday, reported PTI.
Based on a complaint by the victim`s family, the police on Saturday arrested the 36-year-old accused, who runs a private football training centre in the Vasai area, they said.
According to the complaint, the victim joined the coaching centre in 2023 for football training. The coach gained her trust by assuring her of "bright opportunities" in the sport and then allegedly sexually assaulted her over the last three years, the Manikpur police said, reported PTI.
The girl has also alleged that the accused filmed and photographed the assaults. When she reduced contact with him later, the accused threatened to make the videos and photos public to pressure her, they said.
"Distressed by the continued harassment, the girl informed her family members, who then approached the Manikpur police and lodged a complaint," an official said, reported PTI.
Based on the complaint, the police initiated a preliminary inquiry and subsequently registered an FIR against the accused under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for rape and criminal intimidation and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, reported PTI.
Further probe was underway into the case, the police added.
3-year-old girl raped in Maharashtra`s Jalna; man held
In another case, a man allegedly raped a 3-year-old girl after luring her with a chocolate in Maharashtra`s Jalna city, officials said on June 12, reported PTI.
The incident occurred on June 10 when the girl was playing outside her house located in the Sadar Bazar police station limits.
The 26-year-old accused initially did a recce of the area. At that time, the child was playing there, Deputy Superintendent of Police Anant Kulkarni said, reported PTI.
The man then went back and later came on a two-wheeler, lured the child under the pretext of giving her a chocolate, took her with him and allegedly raped her, the police said.
The accused later left the child outside her home. Her family members subsequently lodged a complaint at the Sadar Bazar police station, reported PTI.
The medical report confirmed that the child was raped, the police said.
After examining CCTV footage of the area, the police arrested the man. He was on Thursday produced in a local court, which remanded him in five-day police custody, they added, reported PTI.
