Two labourers were killed on Saturday after a crane collapsed at the under-construction Dahisar-Bhayandar Link Road project site in Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said, reported the PTI.
The incident took place in Bhayandar (West), raising fresh concerns over safety at large infrastructure construction sites in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
According to police, the incident occurred around 12:30 pm when workers were operating on a “gantry crane coastal girders platform”, the news agency reported.
The structure suddenly collapsed while labourers were working on it, resulting in severe injuries to two workers.
Victims declared dead at hospital
The injured labourers were identified as Raghunath Das (38) and Kana Singh (45), as per the PTI.
Both were rushed to a nearby hospital following the accident but were declared dead on arrival, police confirmed.
Bhayandar Police Station Senior Inspector Jitendra Kamble said that an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered, according to the PTI.
Police have begun an investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause of the crane collapse.
The officials were also examining whether any negligence or safety lapses contributed to the accident.
Further investigation is underway, and officials are expected to review safety protocols at the construction site.

The Dahisar-Bhayandar Link Road (DBLR) is an elevated coastal road infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity between Dahisar (West) and Bhayandar (West).
The project is part of broader efforts to enhance road transport links in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Cop killed after piling rig collapses at flyover site
Meanwhile, in an another incident a Mumbai Police constable was killed after a heavy piling rig collapsed on him at an under-construction flyover site on the Sion-Panvel Highway in Mankhurd area, officials said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on Tuesday night along the northbound carriageway of the Sion-Panvel Highway, they said.
The deceased cop was identified as Santosh Gopal Chavan, who was returning home on his motorcycle when the accident took place.
He was attached to Nehru Nagar Police Station and was on deputation to the east control room in Chembur at the time.
According to police, a piling rig used for drilling foundation piles suddenly toppled at the construction site and struck the constable, reported the PTI.
Preliminary findings suggest that the machinery may have been placed on unstable ground, which could have led to the collapse.
Chavan sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.
