Mumbai ANC sends 41-year-old alleged drug trafficker to Yerwada Central Prison

Mumbai’s Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) has detained a 41-year-old alleged drug trafficker under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, 1988, and lodged him in Yerwada Central Prison in Pune for one year, officials said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Chembur resident Farukh Khan, was detained following approval from the Maharashtra Home Department (Special) based on a proposal submitted by the ANC’s Azad Maidan Unit through the Mumbai Police Commissioner.

According to the police, the Azad Maidan Unit of ANC had earlier registered a case against Khan under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) Act, 1985, for alleged drug trafficking activities. A charge sheet was subsequently filed before the court and the matter is currently pending trial.

The police said that after securing bail in the case, Khan allegedly resumed drug trafficking activities, prompting authorities to initiate preventive detention proceedings under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs (PIT)-NDPS Act.

Accused resumed drug trafficking after securing bail, say Mumbai Police

Following the state government’s approval, Khan was detained and sent to Yerwada Central Prison on Wednesday, where he will remain for a year.

The Mumbai Police, in a press note, said this is the eighth detention action by ANC this year under the PIT-NDPS Act against repeat offenders accused of resuming drug trafficking after being released on bail.

The police said multiple cases under the NDPS Act have been registered against Khan at various police stations and ANC units since 2021. These include cases registered at Bhoiwada, Vinoba Bhave Nagar, and Koper Khairane police stations as well as the ANC’s Azad Maidan Unit.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of senior Mumbai police officials, including Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Anil Kumbhare, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Krishnakant Upadhyay, Deputy Commissioner of Police (ANC) Navnath Dhawle and Assistant Commissioner of Police Sudhir Hirdakar.

Anti-Narcotics Cell detains Dharavi man under NDPS Act in major drug crackdown

In a major crackdown on repeat narcotics offenders, the Mumbai Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) on Sunday detained a 36-year-old Dharavi resident under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, 1988.

As per the officials, the accused has been arrested for allegedly continuing drug trafficking activities despite multiple arrests and securing bail.

The accused has been identified as Iqbal Mohammed Ali Sheikh, a resident of Kumbharwada in Dharavi. The officials asserted that he was taken into custody and lodged at Yerwada Central Jail on Sunday, where he will remain under preventive detention for one year.

According to officials from the ANC’s Worli Unit, during the investigation, police scrutinised his criminal record and found that he was allegedly a habitual offender with eight narcotics-related cases registered between 2020 and 2025.
