Mumbai Police raided a pan shop in Ghatkopar area after finding that it was allegedly involved in sale of banned e-cigarettes, officials said.
The shop owner was booked by the Pantnagar Police Station has after recovery of banned e-cigarettes and imported cigarettes from two vehicles parked near the shop.
Police officials said the action was carried out on Thursday following a tip-off about illegal tobacco product sales.
According to police, a team from Pantnagar Police Station conducted a raid near Trivedi Pan Shop on Tilak Road in Ghatkopar East.
During the operation, officers searched a Nano car and a Baleno car that were allegedly being used to store and distribute banned tobacco products.
Banned products recovered
Police said around 90 e-cigarettes and 135 imported cigarettes were recovered from the two vehicles during the search.
A further search of the pan shop premises, carried out in the presence of panch witnesses, led to the seizure of an additional eight e-cigarettes and five imported cigarettes.
Both vehicles involved in the case were seized by the police.
BMC demolishes shop structure
Following the raid, officials from the ‘N’ Ward of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) coordinated with police authorities and demolished the pan shop structure.
Officials said the action was part of the enforcement drive against illegal sale and storage of prohibited tobacco products.
Police have initiated legal proceedings against the shop owner under the provisions of the E-Cigarettes (Prohibition) Act and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
