A finance company has alleged that five persons cheated it of Rs 25.96 lakh by mortgaging fake jewellery and availing loans against it in Maharashtra’s Thane district, news agency PTI reported, quoting the police on Thursday.
As per an FIR registered at Vitthalwadi Police Station in Ulhasnagar on Wednesday, the alleged fraud was committed last year.
The accused mortgaged jewellery with the finance company and obtained loans amounting to Rs 25.96 lakh. During verification, the company later found that the pledged ornaments were fake.
The company approached police on Tuesday, though it was not immediately clear when it first detected the alleged fraud.
A probe into the case is underway, police said.
Three booked for cheating Palghar tribal farmer of Rs 50.27 lakh
Police have registered a case against three persons for allegedly cheating a tribal farmer of Rs 50.27 lakh by fraudulently withdrawing part of his land compensation for the Vadhvan Port project in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, officials said on Thursday.
The agricultural land of Kiran Pandu Palava, a resident of Dahanu taluka, had been acquired for the upcoming Vadhvan Port project, and a compensation amount of Rs 2,91,89,126 was credited into his bank account, Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh said.
Taking advantage of the victim’s illiteracy and lack of awareness, the accused allegedly lured him to a private bank branch in Boisar recently under the pretext of helping him expedite the compensation process.
Once inside the bank, the accused allegedly obtained his signatures and thumb impressions on multiple documents and a digital device. By linking their own mobile number and email ID to the victim’s banking credentials, they allegedly created fraudulent documentation and withdrew Rs 50,27,760 from his account without his knowledge, Deshmukh said.
After discovering the fraud, the farmer lodged a complaint, following which a case was registered on Wednesday against the three accused, all locals, under relevant provisions of cheating and forgery, and a probe was launched.
Police have also advised citizens, particularly farmers and residents of rural areas, not to share sensitive banking details, OTPs, thumb impressions or documents with strangers in matters related to land acquisition or government compensation.
