A week after a man was found bludgeoned to death right outside the NMMC headquarters, the Navi Mumbai police have arrested none other than the victim’s friend for the murder. According to police sources, the two friends were drinking together on April 17, when a minor dispute over food escalated into a heated argument and turned fatal.
The victim has been identified as Akash Prakash Rathod, 31. The police have arrested his friend Subhash Chhannu Lal Dhruve, 27, for the murder.
Once Rathod’s identity was established, the investigation gained momentum. Police scanned his recent movements and call records, eventually zeroing in on his close associates. Suspicion grew around his friend, Dhruve.
During sustained interrogation, Dhruve confessed to the crime, said police.
Police sources said that Dhruve allegedly picked up a stone and repeatedly attacked Rathod on the head in a drunken fit of rage, killing him on the spot.
Investigators revealed that a second individual was present during the crime and allegedly assisted him. Dhruve’s accomplice remains absconding. “Multiple teams have been formed and he will be arrested soon,” said Arun Pawar, a senior police inspector of CBD-Belapur.
