A 58-year-old doctor from Mulund West is among four women allegedly duped of Rs 9.5 lakh by a man who worked as a cook. According to the police, the doctor, a resident of a housing society on LBS Road, along with three other women, approached the Mulund police station on Thursday to file an FIR against the accused, identified as Satish Baghuram More, 30, a resident of Ambivli near Kalyan.
According to the complaint, the accused was introduced to the woman doctor in December 2023 as a cook. “He was hired as a cook, but he was quite infrequent. He would disappear randomly and turn his phone off. It was impossible to reach him,” the complainant said, who requested anonymity.
While working, he would share stories about his family, and the financial conditions, indirectly asking for help and sympathy, the complainant said, adding that he managed to gain confidence.
More continued working at the complainant’s house when she moved to another residence within Mulund in April 2024. He then gradually began seeking money, citing urgent personal needs, said the complainant, claiming she paid him around Rs 5 lakh over several months.
The accused then approached others connected to the complainant. Her 56-year-old friend allegedly gave him Rs 1 lakh, while another 65-year-old acquaintance transferred Rs 50,000. A 43-year-old woman from the same building allegedly handed over gold ornaments, including a mangalsutra and jewellery worth about R3 lakh, after he claimed they were needed for a family marriage. As assurance, he reportedly gave a written undertaking promising to return the ornaments and money.
The accused allegedly promised to repay the amount after selling land in Raigad district but failed to do so. By mid-2024, he stopped reporting for work and later switched off his mobile phone.
The complainant said she made repeated attempts to trace him, including visiting police stations in Ambivli and Kalyan. She also claimed to have filed two non-cognisable complaints with the Mulund police.
“Police tried to contact him but could not locate him. On one occasion, when they reached him, he again assured repayment after selling land. We trusted him, but he cheated us again. Nearly two years have passed, and not a single rupee has been returned,” the complainant said.
Mulund police have registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
