A 34-year-old man from Navi Mumbai was allegedly cheated of Rs 32 lakh with a promise of a job at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), police said on Monday, reported news agency PTI.
The Vashi police have registered a case against Rishabh Rajesh Mhatre, a resident of Uran, under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 336(3) (forgery) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), an official said, reported PTI.
He said that the fraud occurred between March and December 2024 when the alleged accused lured the complainant, a resident of Ulwe, with an offer for the post of "Export Assistant Manager" at JNPT, and created and presented forged documents related to the recruitment process, reported PTI.
Over several months, the complainant was coerced into paying a total of Rs 32 lakh in instalments, and the complainant realised he had been duped when the job did not materialise, the official said.
No arrest has been made so far, and a probe is underway, he added.
Navi Mumbai police bust illegal overseas recruitment agency; seven booked
In another case, the Navi Mumbai police have busted an illegal recruitment agency allegedly involved in cheating people with the promise of lucrative jobs overseas, an official said on Monday, reported PTI.
The Navi Mumbai crime branch and Vashi police on Saturday raided the office of "Goodwill Global Consultancy", which has been operating without authorisation from the Ministry of External Affairs, the official said, reported PTI.
He said that an FIR was registered under section 318 (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relevant provisions of the Emigration Act against seven persons based on a complaint by an assistant section officer from the Ministry of External Affairs (Protector of Emigrants), Mumbai, reported PTI.
A probe has revealed that the accused were conducting recruitment activities for foreign jobs without a valid licence from the Ministry of External Affairs, the official said.
Seven persons associated with the firm have been issued notices under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, he said.
Man posing as ticket inspector nabbed on express train in Thane district
Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man was arrested after he was caught masquerading as a railway ticket inspector onboard an express train in Maharashtra`s Thane district, the government railway police said on Monday, reported PTI.
The incident occurred on the Tapovan Express plying between Manmad and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on December 26, an official said.
Surendra Rajendra Maurya, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was nabbed after a passenger informed a chief ticket inspector (CTI) that another official had been checking tickets in a different compartment, reported PTI.
Knowing no other inspector was assigned to the train, CTI and his colleagues confronted Maurya at Kasara station and realised he was an imposter.
A case was registered against the accused under the Railways Act and Section 204 (personating a public servant) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
