Four dead, 9 injured after BEST bus crashes into pedestrians in Bhandup

Four people died and at least nine were injured after a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus crashed into pedestrians in Bhandup area of Mumbai on Monday night, officials said, adding that the senior police officials were at the spot and those injured were rushed to the hospital.

The police said that among those dead include three women and a man.

"A women and 8 men were injured in the incident and were being treated at hospital. The bus driver has been taken into custody and further investigations were underway," said an official.

Incident took place at busy area

The incident took place at a usually crowded area when BEST bus of Olectra on route A-606 belonging to Vikhroli Depot was at the station road in Bhandup (West), a busy area with regular pedestrian movement.

According to preliminary information, the bus crashed into pedestrians while it was reversing. The exact circumstances were being examined.

A senior Mumbai Police official said, "Those injured were shifted to a nearby hospital and the police officials were at the spot."

Four dead, nine injured

DCP Hemrajsingh Rajput of Zone-7, Mumbai Police said, "Four people died and nine were reported to be injured in the incident."

Emergency services respond quickly

Several emergency agencies were immediately rushed to the spot. These included the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), local police, BEST bus staff and 108 Ambulance services.

Officials said that two injured persons were reported at Rajawadi Hospital following the bus accident at night. The injured include one male and one female. The woman was declared brought dead, while the male is currently receiving medical treatment following the incident.

At Rajawadi Hospital, two victims were reported -- an unknown woman, approximately 31 years old, was declared brought dead and Prashant Lad (51), male, is in critical condition and undergoing treatment, officials said.

At MT Agarwal Hospital, officials said that three persons were brought dead and nine others who are injured were being treated.

Kurla BEST bus accident

Meanwhile, in a similar incident last year, on December 9 an electric BEST bus had crashed into several pedestrians and around 22 vehicles. The bus had moved around 200 metres before coming to a halt after colliding with a cement gate leading to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Nagar on SG Barve Marg in Kurla. Nine people were killed and 42 others sustained injuries in the accident.
