Today, with humans enslaved to technology, what’s a more urgent story than one exploring digital detox? That’s why actor Kunaal Roy Kapur said an immediate yes to Thode Door Thode Paas, which revolves around a family patriarch announcing that he’ll distribute his wealth among the members on one condition — they have to go on a digital “fast”. “Now, we’re finding it easier to communicate with people, but harder to connect with them. I thought it’d be lovely to be a part of something that speaks of our times,” says Roy Kapur of the Zee5 series.
While his on-screen character attempts to cut down on digital media use, Roy Kapur is aware that it’s hard for actors. Most artistes are asked to be active on social media to land work. He, however, doesn’t give into the pressure. “Twenty years ago, the restricted access [to a star] added to the fascination. We used to buy posters of actors. Now, how many people put up film star’s posters? Today, the fascination is to see a star doing something [relatable] or out of their comfort zone [online]. But I don’t want to be an entertainer in those spaces. It’s a separate skill set, outside of acting. Now, both are expected of actors, which is unfair,” he says.
Pankaj Kapur
Kunaal Roy Kapur, who has portrayed several comic roles, says he has long been a fan of co-star Pankaj Kapur’s comic timing. “What always stood out for me, in ‘Office Office’ or ‘Karamchand’, was his deadpan humour. Even when something crazy was happening, his reactions were never over the top. He played it straight.”
