Police have registered a case against an alleged unlicensed moneylender for allegedly harassing and threatening a family over a loan of Rs 18,000 in Dombivli East, Thane district. The complainant’s son died in a hospital on October 13 after reportedly suffering severe mental distress, police said on Saturday.
The Tilaknagar police registered an FIR against the accused, Abid Sayyed, 42, under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Maharashtra Money-Lending (Regulation) Act.
Police said the accused had allegedly threatened the family over outstanding payments and demanded additional money as interest. The allegations are being investigated.
Family borrowed Rs 18,000 in May 2025
According to the complaint filed by Shammu Bapumiya Pinjari, 60, the family borrowed Rs 18,000 from Sayyed in May 2025. The loan arrangement allegedly required them to repay Rs 300 every day for 40 days.
Pinjari told police that the family had paid Rs 7,500 in cash instalments but continued to face harassment over the alleged interest due on the loan.
The complainant alleged that the accused repeatedly pressured the family to make further payments despite the instalments already paid.
Moneylender allegedly threatened debtor’s son
On October 8, Sayyed allegedly visited the family’s residence and demanded an immediate payment of Rs 20,500 towards what he described as outstanding interest, a police official said.
According to the complaint, the accused threatened the young man with severe physical violence if the money was not paid within two days. The threats allegedly included pulling out his fingernails, applying red chilli powder to the wounds and chopping off his fingers.
Police are investigating the allegations and the circumstances surrounding the threats.
Victim dies in hospital on October 13
The young man reportedly suffered severe mental distress following the alleged threats and was taken to a hospital in Mumbai for treatment. He died on October 13, the official said.
The case has been registered following the complaint by his father. Police are investigating the sequence of events, including the alleged harassment and threats and their connection, if any, to the victim’s death.
