A Whatsapp message purportedly from the company boss allegedly cost employees Rs 62 lakh, with Navi Mumbai Cyber Police arresting a Kerala-based man for impersonating the company owner and fraudulently diverting funds.
False identity
The accused, identified as Shameer TP from Kannur, posed as the owner to persuade employees to transfer money into his account between August 19 and 31, 2026. Following a complaint, police registered a case and traced the transactions to identify the accused.
Money trail
Investigators found that Rs 32 lakh of the cheated amount had been deposited into an IndusInd Bank account. They analysed its transactions and traced the money trail to Kannur. A police team travelled to Kerala and arrested Shameer on October 3. He is being questioned to establish his role and trace the remaining money.

Six complaints
The investigation revealed the accused’s account allegedly received money linked to six other cyber fraud complaints across different states. Authorities are scrutinising other bank accounts, mobile numbers, and financial transactions to determine his involvement in other fraud cases and trace where the cheated money went.
Ongoing probe
The case highlights how messaging platform impersonation exploits internal trust. Police are continuing their investigation to establish the full extent of the operation and identify any other individuals who may have benefited from the transactions.
