Police on Tuesday registered a case against a woman Shiv Sena corporator in Nalasopara in Maharashtra's Palghar district and arrested two people in connection with the alleged assault of a man over a comment he posted on Facebook, officials said.
The case was registered against Hemlata Singh, a corporator of the Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC), at Tulinj police station. Singh represents Ward 18 in Nalasopara.
Man allegedly assaulted over Facebook comment
According to police, the incident followed an objectionable comment allegedly posted by the victim, identified as Dharmendra Vishwakarma, on Facebook.
In his complaint, Vishwakarma said he was called to a hotel by a man identified as Arjun Dubey. When he reached the location, Singh and her associate Amrish allegedly confronted him.
The FIR states that Vishwakarma was pushed and slapped before being assaulted with bamboo sticks.
The complaint also alleges that his gold chain was snatched during the assault and that his smartphone, valued at around Rs 20,000, was stolen.
Police register cases and make arrests
Police have registered cases in connection with the incident, including a cross-FIR, officials said.
Vishwakarma and one Manish Singh, who police identified as an associate of the corporator, have been arrested in connection with the case.
Police said Hemlata Singh and other key suspects are currently absconding and that further investigation is underway.
The allegations in the FIR are yet to be established through the investigation. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, including the events that led to the confrontation and the claims regarding the alleged theft of the victim's belongings.
Hospital assault case preceded incident
The incident comes days after another case of alleged assault involving Shiv Sena members in Palghar district.
During the intervening night of September 5 and 6, a group of people allegedly attacked staff members at a private hospital in Palghar over the treatment of an injured participant in the Dahi Handi celebrations.
Shiv Sena Palghar city chief Rahul Gharat was arrested in connection with that incident. Another 14 people were arrested on Friday, including Rohit, the son of Shiv Sena MLA Rajendra Gavit.
The arrests followed allegations that hospital staff were assaulted after the injured participant was brought to the facility for treatment.
Another corporator faced assault allegations
In a separate incident on July 6, Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre of the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) in Thane district and his associates were accused of assaulting doctors and other hospital staff at Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli.
The alleged assault followed claims of a delay in the treatment of a patient at the hospital.
Mhatre and four others were charged under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to assault, causing hurt, unlawful assembly, rioting, criminal intimidation, intentional insult, outraging the modesty of a woman and obstructing public servants from performing their duties.
