The Powai Police in Mumbai have arrested a 28-year-old man allegedly involved in a series of thefts and solved five cases across Mumbai, recovering stolen valuables and a motorcycle worth a total of Rs 3.28 lakh, officials said on Monday.
The investigation began after a gold chain was snatched from a woman outside a school in Hiranandani area of Powai, on September 6, 2026.
According to the police, the 48-year-old victim, a cook from Versova, was checking Google Maps while sitting on her parked scooter when two unidentified men riding a motorcycle allegedly approached her and snatched her gold chain.
The chain was valued at around Rs 2.25 lakh.
Three teams formed for investigation
Following the incident, Powai Police registered a case and formed three investigation teams to trace the suspects.
Police examined CCTV footage from the area, analysed technical data and worked with confidential informers to identify the alleged main accused as Akash Bandu Khatikmare, 28, a resident of Ghatkopar West.
Khatikmare was later traced and arrested within the jurisdiction of VB Nagar Police Station in Kurla.
Police also seized a motorcycle allegedly used in the crimes.
Five theft cases solved
During questioning, police allegedly found links between Khatikmare and several other theft cases registered in different parts of Mumbai.
Apart from the gold chain allegedly stolen in Powai, police recovered a handbag and Bluetooth device linked to a case registered at Amboli Police Station, a backpack containing headphones and a phone charger linked to a case registered at Meghwadi Police Station and two mobile phones linked to separate cases registered at Ghatkopar Police Station.
The total value of the recovered property, including the motorcycle, has been estimated at Rs 3.28 lakh, police said.
Further investigation was being conducted by Sub-Inspector Navnath Dhekale and his team.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of senior Mumbai Police officers, including Commissioner Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner Manoj Kumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner Abhinav Deshmukh, Deputy Commissioner Datta Nalawade and Senior Inspector Atmaji Sawant.
