The Anti-Narcotics Cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested a man from Jogeshwari West for allegedly possessing and selling narcotic substances, including 417 grams of MD and three MDMA pills, police said on Saturday.
The accused was arrested on September 12 in connection with a case registered by the Azad Maidan Unit of the Anti-Narcotics Cell. Police said the total value of the seized drugs, cash and mobile phone is estimated at around Rs 1.26 crore.
Drugs recovered during operation
According to the Anti-Narcotics Cell, the operation followed information received by a team while it was patrolling the Jogeshwari area on September 11. The information allegedly indicated that a person was selling drugs from his residence.
Based on the information, officers from the Azad Maidan Unit conducted a search of the suspect and his residence in the Aksa Majid Road area of Jogeshwari West.
During the search of the accused, police allegedly recovered three MDMA pills weighing 2.04 grams. The pills have been valued at approximately Rs 88,000.
The team also recovered 210 grams of MD, which police have valued at around Rs 63 lakh. An iPhone 15, estimated to be worth Rs 20,000, was also seized during the search.
A further search of the residence led to the recovery of another 270 grams of MD, valued by the police at approximately Rs 62.10 lakh. Officers also seized Rs 25,000 in cash in the form of 50 currency notes of Rs 500 denomination.
Total seizure valued at Rs 1.26 crore
The combined quantity of MD recovered during the operation was 417 grams, while the three MDMA pills weighed 2.04 grams. Police have put the total value of the seized property, including the narcotics, cash and mobile phone, at Rs 1,26,43,000.
The accused was taken into custody on September 12 at around 9.02 am. The case has been registered under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, according to the Anti-Narcotics Cell.
The press note refers to sections 8 and 22 of the NDPS Act in its case details, while another portion cites sections 8 and 21. The discrepancy in the sections mentioned in the release could not be independently clarified from the information provided.
Investigation underway
The Anti-Narcotics Cell is now investigating the alleged source of the drugs and the intended recipients of the seized substances. Police are also expected to examine the accused's mobile phone and other available evidence as part of the investigation.
The operation was carried out by personnel of the Azad Maidan Unit of the Anti-Narcotics Cell under the supervision of senior officers of the Mumbai Crime Branch, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Pournima Chougule-Shringi and Assistant Commissioner of Police Sudhir Hirdekar.
