Mumbai Crime Branch has launched a crackdown on wanted suspects and arrested three men who had allegedly been absconding for periods ranging from 10 to 17 years in separate cases, including cheating and a case registered under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
The arrests were carried out by Crime Branch Units 8, 9 and 12 during separate operations based on technical investigations and information gathered from various sources.
Crime Branch Unit 8 arrested Ganesh Govind Nandeshwar, who had allegedly been absconding for around 15 years in a 2011 cheating case registered under Sections 420 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
According to the police, Nandeshwar had repeatedly failed to appear before the court during the proceedings. The court initially issued an arrest warrant against him. As he continued to remain absent, an absconding warrant was subsequently issued.
Unit 8 received information about his whereabouts and, acting on confidential information, traced him to Dombivli in Thane district.
Nandeshwar was arrested and produced before the court for further proceedings.
Crime Branch traces 2016 case accused to Mahim
In another operation, Mumbai Crime Branch's Unit 9 arrested Abdul Majid Hanif Sheikh, who had allegedly been wanted for nearly 10 years in a case registered in 2016 under Sections 182, 120(B) and 34 of the IPC.
An absconding warrant had been issued against Sheikh by the court after he failed to appear in the case.
Police said Unit 9 officials used technical investigation and information from their sources to trace him. The team learnt that Sheikh was expected to be in Mahim, following which he was arrested from the area.
He was later produced before the court for further legal proceedings.
MCOCA case accused arrested after 17 years
The third arrest was made by Crime Branch Unit 12, which traced and arrested Raju Rama Yadav, 35, who had allegedly been absconding for 17 years in a case registered under the MCOCA and other provisions.
The case was initially registered at Dahisar police station under Sections 3, 25 and 37(1) of the MCOCA.
Police said Yadav had been released on bail but later stopped appearing before the court for hearings. The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, 37th Court, Fort, Mumbai, subsequently issued an absconding warrant against him.
Unit 12 began searching for Yadav. After attempts to trace him at his residential address proved unsuccessful, the team used technical investigation and other sources to track him down.
He was eventually traced to Nalasopara East in Palghar district and arrested on September 23. He was subsequently produced before the court for further legal proceedings.
Senior officers supervised operations
The arrests were carried out under the guidance of Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Anil Kumbhare, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Krishnakant Upadhyay and DCP (Detection-1) Navnath Dhawale, along with other senior officers.
