The Vakola Police in Mumbai have arrested two youths in connection with the alleged snatching of a mobile phone from a 52-year-old man in Santacruz East and recovered the stolen device within hours of the incident, police said.
The incident took place on September 20 when the victim, identified as Hiren Narendra Naik, was walking along the pavement outside a Ganpati temple in Anand Nagar area of Santacruz East, after offering prayers.
According to the police, two unidentified persons allegedly approached Naik and snatched his mobile phone from his shirt pocket before fleeing the spot.
Naik subsequently approached Vakola Police Station and lodged a complaint.
CCTV footage helps police identify suspects
Following the complaint, a police team led by PSI Sushantkumar Patil and PSI Amte began investigating the case.
The team examined CCTV footage from the area and allegedly identified two suspects fleeing from the spot with the victim's phone.
The images were circulated among local informants, following which the police received information about the suspects' whereabouts.
Two youths arrested
Acting on the information, police conducted a raid near Mahakali Temple in Santacruz East, and detained two youths.
They were later placed under arrest.
The accused have been identified as Nishant Sharma, 20, and Yashvardhan Boma, 21, both residents of Santacruz East, said a police official.
During questioning, police recovered the stolen black smartphone from the accused, officials said.
Case registered under BNS
The Vakola Police have registered a case under Sections 304 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The investigation was conducted under the supervision of Senior Police Inspector Navnath Ghuge. PSI Sushantkumar Patil and PSI Amte were part of the investigation, while police constable Sagar Gaikwad provided technical assistance.
The police said the stolen property was recovered following the swift investigation.
