Mumbai Police on Tuesday said that it has arrested two people in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) after one of them allegedly tried to enter a venue allegedly using a suspicious government identity card.
The incident took place on September 7, at the venue where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to attend an event on September 8, said a police official.
Police said a gun was recovered from the bodyguard accompanying the man.
"Two people have been arrested after three men allegedly used a suspicious government identity card and forced their way past security while carrying a firearm at Jio World Plaza in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai," said a senior Mumbai Police official.
He said that the incident took place on September 7, a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Mumbai.
The official stated that the incident had no connection with the Prime Minister’s visit to Mumbai on September 8.
Suspect used suspicious ID
According to the police, the three men allegedly tried to enter Jio World Plaza using a suspicious government identity card. They reportedly forced their way past the mall’s security personnel while one of them was carrying a firearm.
Following the incident, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the BKC Police Station under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections relating to impersonation of a public servant and unlawful entry while armed with a weapon.
Two arrested, weapon found licensed
Police subsequently arrested two people in connection with the incident.
During the investigation, authorities found that the firearm recovered from the group was a licensed weapon.
The police are now investigating the circumstances in which the men attempted to enter the premises, the identity card used by them and the role played by each of the individuals, officials said.
Mumbai Crime Branch investigating the matter
The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken up further investigation into the case.
Investigators are examining the documents presented by the accused, their movements and the circumstances surrounding their entry attempt.
Police have stated that the incident was not linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mumbai visit.
