A 19-year-old teenager died after suffering an electric shock while he was in an artificial pond set up for idol immersion during the ongoing Ganeshotsav 2026, officials said.
The incident took place in the Shyam Nagar area of Jogeshwari East in the early hours of Sunday, they said.
According to the police, the incident took place at around 1.10 am when the deceased, identified Rohit Rathod, entered the artificial pond.
The Mumbai civic body officials said that five artificial immersion ponds had been set up at the site, of which four had been closed after midnight.
The incident occurred when a worker appointed by the contractor entered one of the already closed artificial ponds. He suffered an electric shock and was taken to a trauma care hospital, where he was declared dead, the BMC said.
Meghwadi Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the electrocution.
Victim was working as a volunteer
DCP West, Zone 3, Datta Kisan Nalawade, said that Rathod was working as a volunteer at the immersion pond and had been hired through a third-party contractor to work at the site.
“The post-mortem has been conducted and an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered at Meghwadi Police Station,” DCP Nalawade said.
Cause of electric shock under investigation
The police have launched an investigation to determine what caused the electric shock.
“The investigation is underway into what caused the electric shock. The reason has not yet been established,” the police official said.
Artificial pond shut after incident
Following the incident, Meghwadi Police shut the artificial pond and stopped further Ganpati idol immersions there as the circumstances surrounding the death are being investigated.
The police are examining the arrangements at the site and the circumstances that led to the fatal electric shock.
