Some songs take on a life of their own, flowing through generations and winning much-deserved love. Late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s classic, Sanson Ki Mala, is one such gem. The iconic qawwali has witnessed a fresh surge of love with Mirzapur: The Movie, where it appears in the climax featuring Rasika Dugal’s character Beena Tripathi and her lover, essayed by Mohit Malik.

Interestingly, director Gurmmeet Singh used the classic to deliver a poignant contrast on screen — while Sanson Ki Mala talks about devotion to one’s true love, Dugal’s character betrays her lover in the sequence. For the actor, it is reflective of Beena’s arc. She said, “For Beena, the song becomes a part of her emotional world in that moment. There is so much history in that moment, and so much that she cannot say. The song says things that she doesn’t. That’s what makes the sequence so powerful for me.”

Over the past few days, the track has gone viral, with users mouthing Beena’s dialogue ‘Love hi toh hai, lifetime thodi hi rehta hai’. The actor is pleased to see the track and its unusual usage resonate so strongly with viewers. “It’s lovely when something you’ve been a part of, becomes a part of people’s conversations. The song has been around for generations, and people have had such a deep relationship with it. Now, to see it find a completely new context through Beena, and to see people sharing their own takes on the dialogue while rediscovering the music is wonderful. It reinforces how timeless the song is,” she beamed.
