An aspiring actor who came to Mumbai hoping to find work in Bollywood was arrested by the Amboli Police after he allegedly snatched a gold chain from a paralysed elderly woman in Santacruz East.
Police said they caught the accused, identified as 21-year-old Ashish Attarchand Sharma, within 24 hours of the incident which took place on Sunday. Sharma, a resident of Patna in Bihar, was driven by mounting debt, unemployment, and financial difficulties, said police.

Bollywood dream
According to police, Sharma had earlier tried his luck in the Bhojpuri film industry, where he worked in a few films but failed to establish himself. He came to Mumbai last month in search of opportunities in Bollywood and was staying in Yashwant Nagar, Santacruz East. However, with steady work proving difficult to find and his financial problems mounting, Sharma allegedly turned to street crime.

How elderly woman was targeted
On September 20, Sharma allegedly entered the narrow lanes of Siddharth Nagar near Vakola Pipeline in Santacruz East. Police said he spotted a paralysed elderly woman sitting outside her ground-floor chawl room and targeted her.
He allegedly covered his face with a handkerchief or scarf before approaching the woman and snatching her 21-gram gold chain. He then fled through the lanes of the chawl. The woman’s son, Premsingh Hayatsingh Rawat, 50, subsequently approached the Vakola police station and reported the incident.
CCTV footage helps cops
Investigators examined cameras installed around the surrounding areas and tracked the suspect’s movements. CCTV footage showed a man matching the description of the accused moving suspiciously and changing his disguise. Investigators circulated frames from the footage through their local informant network. Based on information received during the investigation, police conducted a raid in Shyam Sundar Chawl in Yashwant Nagar and detained
Sharma. During questioning, he allegedly confessed to the crime.
Gold recovered
The police team recovered the entire stolen property — a 21-gram gold chain — within 24 hours of the complaint. The investigation was carried out under the guidance of senior police officials by PSI Sushantkumar Patil, PSI Amte, ASI Masne, HC Bhise, and police personnel, including Gaikwad, Gurav, Bhosale, Munne, Gawali, Joshi, Shenvi, including Gaikwad, Gurav, Bhosale, Munne, Gawali, Joshi, Shenvi and Onkar Gaikwad.
