The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has approached the Bombay High Court challenging the Special Sessions Court’s decision to grant bail to former police officer Sachin Waze in the 2021 Antilia bomb scare case, official said.
The matter came up before a bench comprising Justice Sarang Kotwal and Justice Ranjitsinh Bhosale on Tuesday afternoon, they said.
Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh sought an urgent hearing of the NIA’s petition before the bench.
However, Justice Sarang Kotwal declined the request for the matter to be heard by the bench on Tuesday.
The petition is now likely to come up for hearing on Wednesday, September 30, before a bench headed by Justice Bharati Dangre.
Waze granted bail
The NIA’s appeal follows the Special Sessions Court’s decision to grant Sachin Waze bail in the case.
The agency is challenging that order before the High Court and has sought its intervention.
Further proceedings on the NIA’s challenge are expected when the petition comes up before the High Court.
NIA case against Waze
On February 25, 2021, an explosives-laden SUV was found parked near Antilia, the south Mumbai residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani. The case was initially investigated by Mumbai Police.
The vehicle was later linked to businessman Mansukh Hiran, who was found dead in a creek in neighbouring Thane on March 5.
The prosecution had alleged that Waze and others were part of a conspiracy involving the placement of the SUV containing explosives near Antilia and the subsequent murder of Hiran.
Waze, a former Mumbai Police officer, has denied the allegations.
The case was subsequently taken over by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which accused Waze and others of entering into a criminal conspiracy between February and March 2021.
