Police have arrested two history-sheeters for allegedly robbing and murdering a truck driver on the Bhiwandi-Thane Bypass Road in Maharashtra's Thane district, an official said on Saturday.
The arrests followed a three-day investigation during which police teams examined footage from around 150 CCTV cameras to trace the suspects' escape route and identify them.
The accused were identified as Rameez Abdul Rashid Ansari, 23, and Mohammad Alkaish Parvez Alam Momin, 25, both residents of Bhiwandi.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-2, Bhiwandi) Pawan Bansod said the two were arrested in connection with the murder of truck driver Pawan Kumar Kajoo Mahato, who was killed on August 16.
Truck driver stabbed while resisting robbery
According to police, Mahato, a native of Bihar, had parked his trailer along the Bhiwandi-Thane Bypass Road in the early hours of August 16.
The two accused allegedly approached him with the intention of robbing him. When Mahato resisted, they allegedly stabbed him in the throat.
The victim collapsed following the attack, after which the accused allegedly took his money and escaped on a motorcycle, the official said.
Police faced difficulties in the initial stages of the investigation as there were few leads available at the crime scene.
Police scan 150 CCTV cameras
Five police teams were formed to investigate the murder and trace those responsible.
Investigators began by mapping the possible escape routes based on information provided by eyewitnesses. They then examined footage from around 150 CCTV cameras installed along the suspected routes.
By comparing the movements captured on different cameras, the police were able to narrow down the search and identify the two suspects.
The three-day operation eventually led police to Ansari and Momin, who were apprehended in Bhiwandi.
Accused allegedly confess to crime
Police said both accused confessed to the crime during interrogation.
Investigators also found that the two men had criminal backgrounds.
According to police, Ansari has a previous criminal record, while Momin has 18 cases of theft registered against him.
The police are continuing their investigation to establish the full circumstances of the robbery and murder and to determine whether the accused were involved in other similar offences.
