The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the MIDC Police in Mumbai arrested an alleged drug trafficker and seized 302 grams of heroin, estimated to be worth around Rs 3.5 crore, during a late-night operation in Jogeshwari East, officials said on Monday.
The operation was carried out at around 12.10 am on August 23, when a police team was conducting a patrol to curb the sale and consumption of illegal drugs in the area.
According to the police, the team, led by Assistant Police Inspector Ulhas Kholam, was patrolling near Hemant Karkare Garden, close to Sahakari Bhandar in Poonam Nagar, when officers noticed a man behaving suspiciously.
According to police, the suspect attempted to move away after noticing the officers. The team intercepted him and questioned him about his presence in the area.
Police said the suspect initially gave evasive answers before allegedly admitting that he was carrying contraband.
302 grams of heroin seized
The police subsequently conducted a search in accordance with the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
During the search, officers allegedly recovered 302 grams of powdered heroin from the suspect. The seized substance has been valued at approximately Rs 3.5 crore.
According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the arrested man was involved in transporting, trading and supplying narcotics in the MIDC industrial area and nearby localities.
Following a complaint filed by Police Constable Gautam Bade, the MIDC Police registered a case under Sections 8(c) and 21(c) of the NDPS Act.
Further investigation is underway to determine the source of the drugs and identify other people who may be linked to the suspected supply network.
Senior officers oversaw operation
The operation was conducted under the supervision of senior Mumbai Police officials, including Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner (Law and Order) Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner (Western Region) Dr Abhinav Deshmukh, Deputy Commissioner (Zone 10) Datta Nalawade and Assistant Commissioner (Andheri Division) Yogesh Shinde.
The field operation was supervised by Senior Police Inspector Ghanshyam Nair and Police Inspector (Crime) Sunil Karande.
The team included API Ulhas Kholam, Police Head Constables Gautam Bade, Babu Yedge and Sachin Thombre, and Police Constable Binal Shingane.
The investigation into the alleged drug supply network is continuing.
