Byculla Police in Mumbai have arrested a 22-year-old delivery worker within 36 hours of an incident in which eggs were allegedly thrown at a Ganpati arrival procession in Mazgaon area of Mumbai, police said.
The incident took place on Sunday, August 23, during the arrival procession of the Mazgaoncha Morya Ganpati idol. The incident caused tension among devotees and raised concerns about maintaining peace in the area.
Eggs thrown at Ganpati procession
According to police, an unidentified person allegedly threw eggs from an upper floor of a building onto the procession below.
Following the incident, Byculla Police registered a case under sections 299 and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Given the sensitivity of the incident, senior police officers formed five investigation teams to identify the person responsible.
CCTV footage helps police trace suspect
Police used surveillance footage, technical analysis and local intelligence to identify the suspect.
The accused was identified as Danish Sher Khan, 22, who was subsequently arrested.
Police said the arrest was carried out in accordance with the relevant guidelines.
Smoke from fireworks triggered act: Cops
During questioning, police said Khan works as an online delivery worker and supplies eggs to households.
According to the police, Khan was carrying eggs for delivery to an apartment on Rambhau Bhogle Marg when smoke from fireworks being set off by members of the procession allegedly irritated him.
Police said he became angry over the smoke and allegedly threw the eggs at the procession from the building.
Heavy police deployed
Following the incident, heavy police security was deployed in Mumbai’s Mazgaon area after organisers of a Ganesh festival procession alleged that eggs were hurled at the procession during the arrival of the Ganesh idol.
Police personnel were deployed in large numbers in the area to prevent any further escalation and maintain law and order.
Additional police personnel were stationed at strategic locations around Mazgaon, while officials monitored the situation to ensure that the procession and subsequent festival activities could continue peacefully.
Investigation underway
Police said the investigation was carried out under the supervision of senior officers, with teams using technical evidence and local intelligence to identify the accused.
The case remains under investigation, said an official.
