The Cuffe Parade Police in Mumbai have arrested a 27-year-old alleged habitual offender for reportedly stealing a gold mangalsutra and cash from an unlocked house in Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Nagar, Cuffe Parade.
Police said the theft took place between 5 am and 5.30 am on August 26, when the complainant, Sanjay Anand Chavan, 26, was asleep. The door of the house had reportedly been left open inadvertently, allowing the accused to enter and allegedly steal valuables.
Gold mangalsutra, cash stolen
According to the police, the accused fled with a one-and-a-half-tola gold mangalsutra valued at around Rs 2 lakh and Rs 50,000 in cash.
Chavan later approached the Cuffe Parade police, following which a case was registered under Crime Register No. 197/2026 and under relevant section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police keep watch on suspect
During the investigation, Police Sub-Inspector Prashant Nerkar and the Crime Detection Team examined the area and gathered information about suspicious movements.
Police said they learnt that a man had been seen roaming in the area around 5 am and subsequently identified him as a habitual offender. A team visited his residence but could not find him.
The police then allegedly kept surveillance around his locality for two days before laying a trap.
The suspect, identified as Vikesh Thavru Chavan, 27, was eventually apprehended in the Geeta Nagar area. Police said he initially gave evasive replies during questioning.
He was taken to the police station for further questioning, where he allegedly confessed to the theft, following which he was arrested.
Mangalsutra, cash and mobile phones recovered
Police said they recovered the stolen one-and-a-half-tola gold mangalsutra worth around Rs 2 lakh, along with Rs 3,000 in cash and four mobile phones belonging to different companies.
The accused is a labourer and a resident of Cuffe Parade.
Investigation team
The investigation was carried out under the guidance of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Colaba Division, Senior Police Inspector Vinod Gaikwad and Police Inspector (Crime) Anant Shinde.
The team included Police Sub-Inspector Prashant Nerkar, Police Head Constables Patil, Fad and Khamkar, and Police Constables Pathruth and Jadhav. Police Constable Bandgar provided technical assistance.
