Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel foiled two alleged attempts to smuggle undeclared foreign currency at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport's Terminal 2 on Sunday, officials said.
The currency was detected during pre-embarkation security checks and X-BIS screening of two passengers travelling on international flights.
The total value of the foreign currency detected in the two cases was approximately Rs 72.22 lakh, according to the CISF.
USD 45,000 found on passenger travelling to Dubai
In the first case, at around 2.50 pm, a passenger travelling to Dubai on an Air India flight was found carrying USD 45,000, valued at approximately Rs 42.82 lakh.
CISF personnel found USD 30,000 concealed around the passenger's knees using adhesive tape. Another USD 15,000 was found in the passenger's hand baggage.
More USD and dhirams detected
In the second case, at around 7.50 pm, another passenger travelling to Ras Al-Khaimah on an IndiGo flight was found carrying USD 30,000 and UAE dhiram 3,800 in her hand baggage.
The currency was valued at approximately Rs 29.40 lakh, according to the CISF.
Passengers handed over to customs
In both cases, the passengers and the detected foreign currency were handed over to the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) and Customs authorities for further action.
The authorities will conduct further investigation into the source and intended movement of the undeclared currency.
CISF steps up airport vigilance
The CISF said its personnel deployed at airports across the country remain alert during security checks to detect and prevent the smuggling of foreign currency, gold and other prohibited items.
The force also works with Customs and other law enforcement agencies to prevent such activities at airports, it said.
Two passengers held with Rs 68.53 lakh cash at Delhi airport
In an another incident, earlier this month, the CISF had detected Rs 68.53 lakh in cash from two Indian passengers at Delhi airport on August 19, 2026.
The passengers were scheduled to travel to Guwahati on an IndiGo flight and then continue their journey to Agartala.
During the screening of the passengers' baggage, a substantial amount of cash was detected. The Income Tax officials subsequently counted and verified the money.
The total cash recovered was Rs 68,53,500.
The cash found with first passenger was Rs 29,39,000 and Rs 39,14,500 with second passenger, officials said.
The cash was subsequently handed over to Income Tax officials for further action.
