Mumbai Police have arrested a 33-year-old alleged drug peddler and habitual chain-snatcher after seizing MD (mephedrone) worth Rs 1.05 lakh from his possession in Borivali East.
The accused, identified as Hiren Pangjibhai Kavva alias Kavva, a resident of Rajendra Nagar in Borivali East, was arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
According to police, Kavva has a criminal record and is allegedly involved in several cases of chain-snatching, theft, and assault.
Investigators said the accused allegedly accepted orders for MD drugs over the phone and frequently changed the person delivering the contraband, making it difficult for police to track and apprehend him.
Acting on specific information, the Anti-Terror Cell (ATC) team of Kasturba Marg Police laid a trap near the Meghmahal construction site on Dattapada Road in Borivali East on July 28. Police said Kavva arrived at the spot to personally deliver the drugs and was apprehended while attempting to flee.
MD drugs valued at Rs 1.05 lakh were seized from his possession, and a case was registered at Kasturba Marg Police Station under Section 8(c) read with Section 22 of the NDPS Act.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police Gajanan Rajmane, Assistant Commissioner of Police Jayaraj Ranware, Senior Police Inspector Balasaheb Bankar and Police Inspector Chavan. Assistant Police Inspector Yuvraj Inamdar and the ATC team are conducting further investigation into the case.
Maharashtra: Thane cops seize mephedrone worth Rs 3 crore, one held
A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly possessing 1.5 kg of mephedrone worth Rs 3 crore in Maharashtra's Thane city, police said.
The arrest was made during a late-night operation carried out by the Thane Crime Branch.
According to police, officers acted on specific intelligence and laid a trap near Kalyan Phata.
At around 10.30 pm on Sunday, the suspect arrived in an autorickshaw, where he was intercepted by the crime branch team.
During the search, officers allegedly recovered 1.5 kg of mephedrone, an illegal synthetic drug, with an estimated market value of Rs 3 crore.
Police identified the accused as Salman Munna Shaikh, a resident of Mumbra, as per the PTI.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amarsingh Jadhav said the accused had previously been named in an attempted murder case.
Investigators are now examining whether he was also involved in a wider drug trafficking network.
