A 27-year-old Bollywood stuntman allegedly stole 35 grams of his mother’s gold jewellery to raise money for an album he hoped would launch his music career, then spent nearly eight months evading arrest by living in a parked autorickshaw, police said. The MHB Colony police arrested Sumit Sudhakar Mandavkar at around 3.50 am on August 6 after tracing a new mobile number he had obtained while on the run.
Gold stolen from family home
Police said Mandavkar took the jewellery from a wooden cupboard at his family home in Old MHB Colony, Borivli, on December 11. His mother reported the theft, following which an FIR was registered on December 19 under Section 305(a) of the BNS.

Eight months on the run
After the alleged theft, Mandavkar cut contact with his family and went into hiding, police said. His hideout was a parked auto in the Juhu Koliwada area of Santacruz West, where he allegedly stayed for nearly eight months.

Exploiting this vital lead, Police leveraged his identification credentials to request data from cellular service providers, identifying every SIM card issued under his name. This search instantly brought his new mobile number to light.’
The gold trail
Police said Mandavkar confessed during interrogation that he had sold the stolen jewellery to an acquaintance who runs a jewellery shop in Charkop, Kandivli West. Officers subsequently recovered the entire 35 gm of gold. The jewellery was valued at Rs 1.65 lakh when the complaint was filed. Its estimated value at current market rates is around Rs 4.54 lakh.
