Mumbai railway cops return 1,665 stolen and lost mobile phones worth Rs 2.49 cr

The Mumbai Railway Police have returned 1,665 stolen mobile phones worth Rs 2.49 crore to their rightful owners after a large-scale recovery operation across multiple states, officials said.

The recovered devices were handed over during a special ceremony held on July 17 at Navrang Hall in the Government Railway Police (GRP) headquarters at Ghatkopar.

The operation was conducted under Special Recovery Drive-III, led by GRP Commissioner M. Rakesh Kalasagar.

After taking charge in May 2025, Commissioner Kalasagar reviewed crime patterns across Mumbai's suburban railway network, where millions of people travel every day.

Following a rise in mobile phone thefts and robberies, the GRP launched a dedicated campaign to trace stolen devices and return them to their owners.

The drive focused on mobile phones reported stolen between 2024 and June 2026.

Cyber technology helps trace phones

Special teams from the Central and Western Railway divisions, along with the Cyber Cell and local railway police stations, tracked the missing devices using their IMEI numbers and other digital evidence.

Police said many of the stolen phones had been taken outside Maharashtra and were found in different states. Officers coordinated with police departments across the country to identify the users, complete legal formalities and recover the devices.

Passengers thank police

Around 30 complainants shared their experiences during the handover ceremony and thanked the railway police for recovering their mobile phones.

Commissioner Kalasagar said protecting passengers and their belongings remains one of the department's highest priorities. He also praised the use of cyber investigation techniques and said similar recovery drives would continue in the future.

Senior railway police officers, including Deputy Commissioners Sunita Salunke-Thakare and Pradnya Jedge, were also present at the event.
