In a preventive action against repeat narcotics offenders, the Mumbai Crime Branch’s Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) has detained a 37-year-old alleged drug peddler under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, 1988.
The accused, identified as Usman Abdul Kadar Shaikh alias Sonu, is a resident of Halima Manzil on Clare Road in Nagpada. He was served the detention order at Taloja Jail on Friday. Shaikh will now be lodged at Nashik Central Jail for a period of one year.
According to the ANC, Shaikh was arrested earlier this year by the Azad Maidan Unit under Sections 8(c) and 21(b) of the NDPS Act, 1985, for allegedly trafficking narcotic substances.
During the investigation, police found that he had four NDPS-related cases registered against him. A charge sheet has already been filed in the pending case.
The police said Shaikh had a history of returning to the narcotics trade after securing bail, prompting the ANC to propose his preventive detention under the PIT-NDPS Act.
The proposal was submitted to the Maharashtra Home Department through the competent authority and was subsequently approved.
ANC carries out 12th preventive detention under PIT-NDPS Act in 2026
The ANC said this is the 12th preventive detention under the PIT-NDPS Act carried out by the unit in 2026, targeting habitual drug offenders who allegedly resumed illicit activities after being released on bail. Eleven such detentions had already been executed earlier this year.
Besides the latest NDPS case, Shaikh has criminal cases registered at JJ Marg Police Station, the ANC Bandra Unit, the ANC Azad Maidan Unit, and Wagle Estate Police Station.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Anil Kumbhare, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Krishnakant Upadhyay, Deputy Commissioner of Police (ANC) Pournima Chougule-Shringi, and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ANC) Sudhir Hirdekar. The action was led by Azad Maidan Unit Senior Police Inspector Shailesh Suryawanshi along with other officers of ANC.
