Mumbai Police on Thursday said that the MIDC Police Station in Andheri East have arrested two alleged habitual offenders involved in a series of electric scooter thefts across Mumbai and recovered 11 stolen e-scooters worth more than Rs 6.18 lakh.
The arrests followed an investigation into the theft of a Jemopai electric scooter belonging to a 22-year-old man, which was reported stolen on July 20 while parked outside the Opus Centre in Andheri East.
A case was registered at MIDC Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation was launched.
As part of the investigation, the MIDC Crime Detection Team examined footage from around 50 to 60 CCTV cameras installed near the crime scene and surrounding areas. Officers also carried out technical surveillance and gathered intelligence from confidential informants.
Based on the information received, police laid a trap and detained the main suspect. During questioning, he allegedly revealed the involvement of another individual, leading to the arrest of a second suspect.
The arrested men have been identified as Mohsin Akbar Ali Maltabde (25), a resident of Jogeshwari East, and Arafat Hafiz Shaikh (22), a resident of Kurla West.
11 scooters recovered
Police said sustained interrogation revealed that the pair had allegedly stolen electric scooters from several parts of Mumbai, including Andheri, Dadar, Worli, Vikhroli, Mumbai Central, Chandivali, Charni Road and Wakola.
Acting on the information provided by the accused, officers recovered 11 stolen electric scooters through official seizure procedures.
Investigators said that two of the recovered vehicles have already been linked to registered theft cases at MIDC Police Station, while efforts are underway to identify the owners of the remaining nine scooters.
Further probe underway
Police were examining records from police stations across Mumbai to determine whether the two suspects were involved in additional vehicle thefts.
Officials said the investigation is continuing and further recoveries or arrests were possible.
