A 40-year-old man was arrested for allegedly strangling his partner to death over suspicion that she was having an affair and transporting her body by car from Maharashtra's Kolhapur district to Thane, police said on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Prakash Ananda Patil, a resident of Shirgaon village in Kolhapur district, was apprehended by the police in Bhiwandi after they tracked his vehicle based on a tip-off, reported PTI.
Woman allegedly killed at farm in Kolhapur
According to the police, Patil was in a relationship with Surekha Shivajine Are (40), a widow and a resident of the same village, reported PTI.
Senior Inspector Vijay Kadbane of Narpoli police station said the accused allegedly suspected the woman of being involved with another person, reported PTI.
Police said Patil allegedly strangled Surekha to death at his farm in Shirgaon at around 11 a.m. on Sunday.
Body transported over 350 km
Investigators said that after the alleged murder, the accused wrapped the woman's body, placed it in his car and drove overnight to Kasheli in Bhiwandi, more than 350 kilometres from Kolhapur.
The police received information from a local resident in Bhiwandi on Monday morning, following which officers traced the vehicle and took Patil into custody.
Zero FIR registered
Police seized the vehicle and sent the woman's body for a postmortem examination.
"We took the accused into custody, seized the car and sent the body for postmortem. A formal FIR (Zero FIR) was registered under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita before transferring the case to the jurisdiction concerned for further action," Senior Inspector Kadbane said.
Investigation continues
Police said the accused's exact plan for disposing of the body has not yet been established.
The case has been transferred to the jurisdiction concerned for further investigation, and police are continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder.
Woman kills 19-year-old daughter in Ulhasnagar over her relationship with youth
In a separate incident, a woman was arrested on Monday in Ulhasnagar township of Thane district for allegedly murdering her 19-year-old daughter following an argument over the victim's relationship with a youth of the area, a police official said, reported PTI.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the day at the family''s residence in Bhaiyasaheb Ambedkar Nagar, Ulhasnagar police station senior inspector Santosh Awhad told PTI.
"At around 2 am, Asha Datta Garad (40) confronted her daughter Amruta Garad regarding her love affair with a local youth. She asked Amruta to cut off all ties with him, which the teen girl refused. In a fit of rage, Asha strangled Amruta with the latter's scarf," the official said citing the complaint lodged by the victim's father, reported PTI.
Asha Garad was arrested for murder and other offences under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Awhad added, reported PTI.
