Mumbai Police have registered 13 criminal cases in connection with the ongoing protests held across the city since July 18, a senior police official said on Wednesday.
According to the police, the cases have been registered at various police stations under different legal provisions relating to unlawful assembly and violation of prohibitory orders.
Police said the cases involve around 400 accused who allegedly participated in demonstrations held without permission or in breach of restrictions imposed by the authorities.
The legal action relates to protests organised at different locations in Mumbai as part of the ongoing agitation over alleged examination irregularities.
Investigation continues
Mumbai Police said further investigation into the registered offences is underway.
Officials have not disclosed whether additional arrests or cases are expected as the investigation progresses.
1,500 people gathered at Shivaji Park, 200 protesters detained
Mumbai Police on Wednesday said that around 1,500 people had gathered at Shivaji Park and 200 protesters were detained from the spot.
"200 protesters were detained during a demonstration at Shivaji Park in Dadar on Wednesday," said a police official.
The protests in support of Cockroach Janta Party's agitation at Jantar Mantar in Delhi over issues related to the NEET examination paper leak have continued in Dadar area of Central Mumbai.
The protesters have been demanding Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation.
According to the police, the supporters from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and other organisations gathered at the venue without obtaining the required permission for the protest.
Large gathering at Shivaji Park
Police said that after the initial detentions, around 1,500 protesters gathered at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.
The crowd that had gathered allegedly without legal permissions was later dispersed peacefully by police personnel, with officials stating that further action would be taken according to the law.
The demonstration was organised over alleged irregularities linked to the NEET examination and included demands for greater transparency, reforms in the education system and resignation of education minister.
Around 200 detained during protest in Chembur
Around 200 protesters were detained by Chembur Police on Wednesday after a demonstration was held in violation of prohibitory orders at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Garden Chowk, a senior police official said.
According to police, around 700-800 protesters gathered at the location at around 1 pm and staged a demonstration despite restrictions in place.
Police officials said that they tried to peacefully explain the situation to the protesters and asked them to leave the area. Following the instructions, the crowd dispersed.
However, around 200 individuals were separated from the gathering and taken into custody by police.
The official said that the legal proceedings have been initiated against the protesters for allegedly violating prohibitory orders and other applicable sections of law.
