The Mumbai Police have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the fatal stabbing of a passenger inside a suburban train following an argument over closing the compartment door during heavy rain on Tuesday night. According to investigators, Roshan Suvarna worked at a cargo facility in Andheri and also did part-time supply work for Amazon-related material distribution. Police said the knife used for the murder had been given to him by a friend as a sample for sale.
Dispute escalates
Roshan Suvarna, the accused
The Suvarna boarded the first-class compartment from Andheri and stood near the door when the deceased, Mayank Lohar, reportedly asked him to close the door. An argument broke out between the two, and escalated after four to six passengers seated near the doorway, who were also getting drenched, got involved. The group, including Lohar, assaulted Suvarna, causing him to suffer an injury near his eye. Other passengers then intervened and separated the two sides.
Escape from moving train

The train was between Malad and Kandivali at the time of the attack. As the train reached Borivli station, Suvarna jumped off the moving train upon arrival at the platform and escaped. “He took an autorickshaw to his Mira-Bhayandar residence, changed his clothes, and left. We followed his route to Meghdoot Apartment, obtained his mobile number, and traced his location to Panvel station, where he was detained on Wednesday. Seven teams were formed, and more than 400 CCTV cameras were examined to trace him,” said Senior Police Inspector Datta Kopekar.
Fatal retaliation
According to the police, the Suvarna became enraged after realising his eye was bleeding and blamed Lohar for triggering the altercation. He then pulled out the knife from his bag and repeatedly stabbed
him.
Fleeing to Mangaluru
Police said Suvarna has relatives in Panvel. It is believed that he was planning to flee by train from Panvel to his hometown in Mangaluru. The police said Suvarna regularly consumed alcohol after work and had consumed more than usual on the day of the incident. He allegedly stood at the train door because of the heat. Suvarna has confessed to the crime. However, the murder weapon is yet to be recovered.
