HBO's House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 raises the stakes once again as the fallout from the Battle of the Gullet reshapes the future of Westeros. With Prince Jacaerys Targaryen's death weighing heavily on Rhaenyra, the queen finally reclaims King's Landing in an episode packed with shocking betrayals, bloody executions and an ending that has left fans questioning Aemond Targaryen's fate.
The episode opens with Rhaenyra mourning Jace, making him the second son she has lost in the brutal civil war.
Determined not to let his sacrifice be in vain, she pushes ahead with her plan to seize the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, Alicent Hightower attempts to honour the secret agreement she made with Rhaenyra by arranging a peaceful surrender of King's Landing, but events quickly spiral beyond her control.
Rhaenyra finally takes the Iron Throne
With Daemon leading the assault, Rhaenyra's forces enter King's Landing and successfully reclaim the capital. However, victory comes at a devastating price. Otto Hightower, who had remained imprisoned since last season's finale, is brought before the new queen after she arrives at the Red Keep. In one of the episode's most brutal moments, Otto is beheaded before Rhaenyra finally takes her seat on the Iron Throne.
The shocking execution leaves Alicent horrified, as she realises the peaceful transition she had hoped for has already been stained with blood. The episode also reinforces the importance of the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy, with Daemon reminding Rhaenyra of the visions he witnessed at Harrenhal and strengthening her resolve to fight for the future of House Targaryen.
Is Aemond Targaryen dead?
While Rhaenyra celebrates a hard-fought victory, Team Green suffers another setback. Aemond Targaryen arrives at Harrenhal determined to claim the fortress for himself. Unlike Daemon's earlier conquest, Aemond chooses violence, killing Ser Simon Strong and members of House Strong despite their willingness to surrender.
His ruthless actions come at a cost. During the attack, Aemond is stabbed through a gap in his armour and is left seriously wounded. The episode ends with the prince seeking help from the mysterious Alys Rivers, prompting fans to wonder whether he survives.
The answer, however, is yes. Although Aemond's injuries are severe, previews for upcoming episodes confirm that he remains central to the war ahead. With Alys Rivers now entering his story and Rhaenyra finally seated on the Iron Throne, the battle for Westeros is only becoming more dangerous.
