Meet the Cannes-returned padosi

To Sunita Rajwar, shooting for Gullak doesn’t feel like work. Instead, she describes it as a vacation to one’s grandmother’s house. The analogy, though unusual, fits quite right. After all, the series—starring Jameel Khan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Vaibhav Raj Gupta and Harsh Mayar—evokes that fuzzy feeling as it tells the everyday stories of the Mishra family. “It’s refreshing every time we start Gullak’s shoot. We all are very well-connected and there are no ego hassles. It’s like going on a vacation to your dadi or nani’s house. During the reading of season four, I once told Geetanjali that her role was so good, I wished I had got it. Gullak feels that personal to all of us,” says Rajwar, who plays the Mishras’ nosy and fast-talking neighbour.

The actor with Geetanjali Kulkarni

Over the past 20 years, Rajwar has been a frequent face in television shows and films, but she has felt the spotlight more firmly on her in the last few years. The actor thanks OTT for the diverse roles coming her way. “Featuring as one of the primary characters is an achievement. We are blessed right now that we have so many good roles for women across age groups. This is the best time for actors on OTT.”

It’s inarguably the best time for the actor. Only a fortnight ago, Rajwar’s movie, Santosh, co-starring Shahana Goswami, premièred at the Cannes Film Festival. Reflecting on it, she says, “Cannes was beyond my dreams. For a long time, I was numb, wondering, ‘Is this really happening?’ It’s when people came up to congratulate me that it hit me that something big was happening. It was wonderful to see Indian films and talent doing so well there.”
