Two labourers, working in Mumbai for several months as carpenters, stole gold ornaments from the house they were working at and buried the gold inside one of their houses in their native village Amreli in Gujarat. The Kandivli police have arrested the duo and recovered the gold worth more than Rs 4.75 lakh.
Police sources said the accused, Dilip Parmar and Punkajkumar Meena, were also retiling the floor at Shankar Pujari’s house in Kandivli West. They had allegedly stolen the jewellery from Pujari’s cupboard.
Cops dig up the jewellery from the carpenter’s house in Gujarat
Pujari and his wife were renovating their house and had employed the duo to re-tile their flat. From September 16 to 22, while the house was being renovated, Pujari and his wife went to stay with a relative.
When they returned on September 22 to inspect the work, Pujari noticed that they had forgotten the key to the safe in the house and when he opened the cupboard to check, he found the gold ornaments missing. When he asked the duo, they denied knowing anything about the jewellery. Pujari then approached the police and registered a complaint.
The recovered jewellery
Under the guidance of Senior Inspector Babasaheb Salunkhe, PSI Suryakant Pawar and his team began the investigation. They took both the accused into custody for questioning, and after investigation, it was found that Parmar had suddenly gone to his hometown two days after starting the work. He returned and continued his work at the Pujaris’ residence. “When we interrogated Parmar further, he confessed to the crime,” said an officer.
Pawar recovered the jewellery after getting digging it up from Parmar’s house in Amreli. The two had decided to sell the gold as soon as they were cleared of suspicion, the officer added. “The court has remanded them in police custody till September 29,” said Senior Inspector Balasaheb Salunkhe of Kandivli police station.
